445. Learn Braille

My Story

Updated February 8, 2009

I was a voracious reader as a kid. I couldn’t get enough. Most of the kids were allowed to check out two books a week from the school library. I was allowed up to five. I was also allowed to check out books from the ‘big kids’ section when I was in third grade.

I must have read thousands of books by the time I graduated from high school but a few definitely stood out from the rest – a few that I remember even now. One was a biography of Helen Keller. I was so inspired by her and her heroic teacher Annie Sullivan. I must have reread it a dozen times. That was when I decided I wanted to learn to read braille, to be like Helen.
