To Do
439. Moonlight with a hobby
My Story
Completed February 2004
When I got my first computer in 1996, the very first thing it occurred to me to use it for was to build a web site. Armed with a truly awful FTP client, a 14400 modem and Notepad, I set about creating a true monstrosity. But I kept at it. ‘View source’ is the most brilliant thing built into a browser – you can see how anybody did anything. Take it apart, see how it works, learn something new. Gradually my little web site improved and I ended up winning awards from AOL and my little site got some notice.
I kept tinkering around, trying out JavaScript. I worked my way through a few books – I built a few more sites. It was definitely an engrossing hobby. I wanted to see if I could make some money at it, but I wasn’t sure where to start.
Then a friend of a friend needed a web site for her small business, and I was recommended. I hit the ground running and built out a beautiful if simple little web site. It looked professional and it’s still live today, still hard at work for her small business, bring her clients.
Over time, I learned enough to land a regular full time job building web sites, but I’m still moonlighting with my hobby. I love it.
