530. Create a story quilt

My Story

Updated December 11, 2009

Being a crafty and creative person myself, I’ve always adored walking through craft and art festivals, admiring the handiworks of my fellow creators. A few years ago, booths full of colorful, intricate, and amazing quilts started catching my eye.

My stepmother’s stepmother was a quilter. How’s that for an odd family relation? One year I guess she decided she needed to get rid of bags of old clothes, blankets, and tablecloths and set about making giant quilts for everyone in the family. They were color mismatched quilts with bits of my stepgrandfather’s uniforms, old dresses, christmas table clothes, baby clothes and blankets – anything and everything. The quilt was beautiful and made with love, and while it maybe told the story of many years of my family, it wasn’t a story quilt.

I’m not sure if I’d like to make a story quilt to tell a real life story or a fairy tale. Maybe I’ll start with a small one that tells a children’s story and gift a friend who has a child.
