To Do

485. Have a personal trainer for awhile

My Story

Completed June 2010

I used to be so jealous of celebrities when they’d talk about their fabulous personal trainers who pushed them to incredible levels of fitness. I wasn’t sure I’d ever be able to afford such a luxury.

Twice, I signed up for personal training sessions at the gym, but neither time did I feel really satisfied with my experience. What I really wanted was someone to teach me how to work out and get the most out of what I was doing and show me what I really needed to be doing to reach my goals.

Both times, I got someone who only wanted to work directly with me one on one all the time and wanted me to sign up for four or five training sessions a week. It was ridiculous.

Then, just a couple weeks ago, I decided to try a personal trainer who wasn’t affiliated with a gym. I did some research and found a few near me. I talked to them on their phone and learned about their approaches. I found the one who seemed to fit the best and have had a couple of sessions now. He’s really focused on teaching me what I need to do and is also a nutritionist, so we’re tackling the food I eat too. It feels great. I don’t feel like my workouts might be a waste of time – I know I’m doing just what I need to do right now. I’m learning to judge when I’m working too hard and when I’m not working hard enough. And I’m learning to keep a balance between calories in and calories out and how to keep tabs on that without driving myself crazy. It’s awesome.

And, it’s not that expensive, and not such an exclusive luxury.
