299. Watch the sun rise on a Hawaiian isle

My Story

Updated January 17, 2010

It’s been a long time since I watched a sun rise. I think probably the most memorable was on a car trip the summer before I started 3rd grade. We woke up while it was still dark and piled into the car for a 12 hour drive. Even then, I wasn’t able to sleep in a car like most other kids. So while my sisters slumbered, I sat in the back seat, and watched the sky in front of us getting lighter and lighter while the sky was still black and dotted with stars out the back window. I watched the light grow and grow until it ate up the entire sky. It seemed so magical while it was happening, but once the sun was completely above the horizon, it was a day like any other.

I’ve seen a few since then, but could any be as magical and wonderful as watching it happen in Hawaii? I’d huddle down under a blanket in the predawn chill and watch as the world wakes up.
