179. Invest in the stock market

My Story

Updated August 1, 2010

Honestly, I’m not sure if I should mark this one complete or not – the fact is that I have and still actively do invest in the stock market. I have a 401K and an IRA that both have portions allocated to stocks.

But the spirit of this to do item was actually to buy stocks themselves. Which I still intend to do. I’ve been reading up on personal finance lately and I’m convinced that savings has to come first, and riskier investments like buying individual stocks shouldn’t be attempted until you are 100% debt free, you’re maxing out both a 401K and a Roth IRA, and you’ve got the equivalent of six to eight months’ living expenses in a readily accessible high-yield savings account.

In other words, do everything you can to ensure your future, then take some risks. I am 100% debt free, am working on building an emergency fund, and once that’s set, I’ll work on maxing out my 401K and Roth. Whew! If I manage to get that far, I’ll think about taking some risks with what’s left over.
