490. Enjoy the view from the roof
Completed August 2004
I lived in an older apartment building in Hollywood when I first moved back to California that still had the stairs to the roof.
At first, I didn’t go up there. We weren’t supposed to. There wasn’t any kind of safety railing and the roof wasn’t really made to have a lot of people walking around on it. Heating units, air conditioners, and cooking vents protruded all over the roof.
Then the landlady changed the sign on the door from “Do not enter” to “Enter at your own risk”. I used to go up there and just sit and look – at downtown, at the lights of Hollywood, at the trees and neighboring buildings, at the moon, at the few stars that could be seen through the light pollution of the city.
